Singing Your Soul Free
Empowering the chronically ill & disabled community to make a joyful noise
This is an online gathering to empower pALS and other people with serious chronic illnesses and disabilities to feel safe in the sounds that we are still able to make. We can transform these "weird" sounds into music. We can liberate ourselves through being present, finding moments of joy and love, meditating, honoring our grief, and singing the songs our souls are longing to express.
Being told that your body is betraying you, that you’re losing your ability to do everything, that you’re dying – it does something to your soul. You become an “other” that society and the healthcare industry would rather not have to see or hear. As your body changes so do the sounds you make, both becoming more and more alien. You hold a constant grief that is sometimes bigger than your knowing how to hold it.
It’s important not to attach our entire beings to the idea that we are dying. We don’t have to fear it. We don’t have to like it by any means, but if we can accept what is happening physically, we can be more adept at loving ourselves as we are. When we aren’t trying to hide it or deny it and aren't getting caught up in stories of desolation and blame, we can embrace the shadows and the grief without latching onto them.
It is important to work towards the idea that we are physically manifesting in new ways, that we are in relation to our nerves and the rest of the collection of entities that we are. It’s important to learn to listen, coexist, honor what is happening and make space for authentic expressions of love and life. It’s important to remember that illnesses and dying and being in different bodies is a natural part of living and being human.
